Swim Coaching Staff

Head Coach — Emmett Hannam

Emmett Hannam is a Battlefield High School 2021 alum and a four-year varsity letter swimmer and States qualifier. He swam summer league for eleven years with the Piedmont Tsunamis and spent his 14-year club career with the Quantico Devil Dolphins, Potomac Marlins, OCCS, NCAP West, Cavalier Aquatics, and UVA Club Swim. He studied Computer Science, Economics, and Data Science at the University of Virginia and worked with UVA’s varsity swim team on research into swimmer efficiency. He has coached with the Tsunamis’ White Caps program and helped run clinics for the Potomac Marlins, Velocity Swim Labs, and UVA Club Swim. He works as a data scientist during the day and lifeguards on weekends. Emmett is excited to help each swimmer improve while keeping a healthy school-life balance.

Assistant Coach — Kat Diatchenko
Kat Diatchenko is a Battlefield High School alumna and former Division I swimmer at George Mason University, where she studied Computational Data Science. With 17 years of swimming experience, she spent much of her competitive career swimming with NCAP and the Piedmont Tsunamis. She has over seven years of coaching experience through the Piedmont Tsunamis and private swim instruction, working with swimmers of various ages and skill levels. Having spent most of her life in and around the pool, Kat understands both the competitive and social sides of swimming. She believes in pushing athletes to reach their potential while creating an environment where teammates genuinely enjoy showing up for each other. She’s excited to return to Battlefield as a coach and contribute to the program she was once part of. Outside of swimming, Kat enjoys skiing, traveling, and finding hobbies that don’t require waking up at 4:30 in the morning.

Assistant Coach — Stephen Gilbert 
Stephen Gilbert is a Patriot High School alum and a four-year varsity letter winner who qualified for the Virginia State Championships his junior and senior years. He continued his swimming career at Milligan University, where he swam collegiately while earning a degree in Computer Science and Information Systems and later a Master of Business Administration. He coached the Bridlewood Swim Team from 2015 to 2022, progressing from junior coach to assistant coach and working with swimmers of various ages and ability levels. He returned to Milligan as a volunteer coach for the swim team during the 2025–2026 season. Stephen is excited to help swimmers improve their technique, build confidence, reach their goals, and develop a lifelong love of swimming.
