Coach Jay Thorpe

Coach Jay hails from Akron, Ohio where he began his swim career at the age of 6 at Portage Country Club. Developing a love for swimming, he began swimming AAU and YMCA. Coach Jay was a high school All-American and 6 time collegiate All-American. Coach Jay lives is Bristow, VA with his wife Wendy and has two children J.D. and Sydney.

Battlefield H.S. – Beginning his 14th year as Head Coach

  • 42 NISCA High School All-Americans
  • 73 NISCA Academic All-Americans
  • 15 State Champions (10 individual and 5 relays)
  • 4 State Records
  • 1 Girls State Championship
  • 2 Girls State Runner Up
  • 2012 Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year

Piedmont Tsunami Swim Team – Head Coach and Program Director

  • 4 PWSL Blue Division Champions (League Champions)
  • 1 PWSL Red Division Champions
  • 10+ League Records
  • Broke 62 of 67 team records in 6 years.
  • Direct all indoor and outdoor training activities
  • Head Coach for team consisting of 350 competitive and developmental swimmers.

USA Swim Coach – 10+ years – Coached various club teams, most recently with QDD (Quantico Devil Dolphins)

  • 50 + Sectional qualifiers.
  • Over 30 Zone Championship qualifiers.
  • 100+ Junior Olympic qualifiers.

Freedom Frogs – 3 years – Special Olympics Head Coach

  • 30+ State Champions

Evan Brandt, Battlefield Assistant Swim Coach

Assistant Coach Evan Brandt

Evan Brandt is serving as Battlefield Swim Team Assistant Coach for the 2020-2021 season. A former Battlefield swimmer, Evan has continued to assist with the Battlefield program since graduating high school and comes to us with years of swimming and coaching experience.

Evan was a Junior National qualifier and member of Occoquan Swimming’s (OCCS) National Training Group . He was also a Virginia High School League (VHSL) State Swim and Dive Championship qualifier and captain of the Battlefield High School Varsity Swim Team.

Coach Evan currently attends the University of Virginia, where he is studying Mathematics and Spanish and is working towards a Master’s degree in Education.

Evan is also a very active member of the club swim team at the University of Virginia where he has qualified for the Collegiate Club Swim & Dive National Championship. Welcome back Coach Evan to another season of the Piedmont Tsunamis summer swim team!
